‘Shaere’ (Poet) Suleiman Al-Issa I wished that the autumn tree who’s made her leaves fall on the path of life, was pardoned from this long standing chore and relieved from having to do so. Bounty is in the youth and its blessings are a presence in this very room. Brothers have insisted that I leave them with a poem and without a doubt I will oblige, even if just for a few minutes. Poem starts: (2x) I did not give up my feather to the destructive despair of firewood. Until the night challenged the dormant thunder. With every beating pulse that I possess for the unification of my desert nation, I am its slain witness. Sisters and brothers We were the first caravan of displacement during the late 30s of this miserable and oppressive century. From the small village lost behind barbed wire fences and fog, in the Province of Iskanderon. Emerged the little boy standing in front of you today, who carried the Arab identity on his skinny shoulders, dressed in simple cloth. After 26 years of exile, he returned to his small village which lies on the banks of Al-Asi river, near Antakia. He recognized his sisters and brothers at first and secondly, their childhood playground along with the fig tree, that from under its shadows, he wrote his first verses when still just 9 years old. Soundless and with reverence, he approached the tree, his childhood friend. After 26 years, he left her poems again, titling them: “Fig Tree & The Poet.” (2x) As strangers we greeted one another. Elevating her wings, a branch hushed to its neighbour. “Strangers dragged down a river current of silent years, like denying string a melody.” (2x) Now here above the tree trunk! Goddesses appeared, throwing eloquent whispers to address my consciousness. (2x) Here, the little boy of yesterday wrote his first lines in his note books! Here, he praised the cheeks of his beautiful girlfriend! Here, I used to read my poems to the clouds! Here, I used to read my poems to the clouds, for an unseen storm that exhausted me in imprisonment! Here... A breeze came down from the Fig tree and hugged me, secretly telling me... Yes, I do know you.
